For the first six months of my life, I was part of a happy little Texas family. I’ve seen photos showing my then-14-year-old brother, Guy, smiling along with our dad as my mom cradled newborn me in her arms. But my family was torn apart when a drunk driver killed my parents, Leslie and Joe Crawford, on June 22, 1985.

It sounds like a long time ago, but that drunk driver did more than kill my parents. He trapped my brother in an emotional trauma that he never could move on from, finally driving Guy to hang himself this summer. He died on June 4, 2021, just weeks before the 36th anniversary of our parents’ death.
