A New Braunfels man is facing intoxication assault charges after police said he drove on the wrong side of the road and crashed into another vehicle.

New Braunfels fire and police units were dispatched at 10:41 p.m. Saturday to the 1200 block of Loop 337 for reports of a major crash.

When they arrived, NBPD Sergeant Greg Fuller said officers spoke with multiple witnesses who said a 66-year-old local man was driving a 2009 Chevrolet 2500 northbound in the southbound lane.

A 31-year-old local behind the wheel of a 2009 Mazda was traveling southbound when two vehicles collided head on.

A passenger in the Mazda, a 43-year-old New Braunfels woman, was critically injured and had to be extricated from the vehicle. She was taken to a San Antonio hospital. The condition of the Mazda’s driver is unknown.

Fuller said authorities determined the driver of the Chevrolet was intoxicated, and he was placed under arrest. He was taken to the Comal County Sheriff’s Office and charged with one count of a third-degree felony, intoxication assault. His name has not yet been released.

The 1200 block of Loop 337 was closed for 4.5 hours in both directions.

Fuller said the NBPD is still investigating the crash.
