Eight teams descended on Cougar Stadium on Friday, hoping to get one more good track and field meet under their belts before the beginning of district meets next week.

The ideal conditions — cloudy and a little breezy and humid for the start of the field events — transformed into cold, drizzle and wind well before the end the meet. However, the Canyon Cougar Relays wound up giving each of the squads what they’d come to get — that all-important final district tune-up.

Smithson Valley’s boys outpointed Lockhart by 54 points to win first place. Canyon was third and New Braunfels fifth. The Rangers girls team led Dripping Springs by one point going into the final event, the 1600 relay, but a third-place finish there enabled Smithson Valley to win, 123-110. New Braunfels finished third and Canyon sixth.

There were few personal bests, and none in the relays, which flew into the face of a stiff north wind. It was a little bit more favorable for the sprints and hurdles, which went north to south.

Meet records were set by several from Smithson Valley — Julie Amthor in the girls 800 meters, Taylor Cowart in the boys triple jump and Collin Shurbet in the boys 300 hurdles. Lockhart’s Gabby Galvan established a new standard in the girls discus, teammate Rory Tunningley did the same in the boys 1600 and Hays’ Jessica Doyle matched the pole vault record set in 2005.
