No treats at Bakeless Bake Sale

Published November 25, 2009

Cookies, cakes and pies are nowhere to be seen at the Canyon Lake Animal Shelter’s second annual Bakeless Bake Sale.

The idea for the bake sale came from the American Humane Society, said office manager Carlton Barney. They hosted a “No Show Baseball Game,” where people just mailed in the admission price, or the price of a hot dog, instead of actually attending.

The bake sale works on exactly the same idea. “Instead of them coming in to buy cakes, they mail the price of it in,” Barney said.

Of course, those who mail in money won’t be getting any baked goods in return. Instead, they will buy the knowledge that they helped the homeless dogs and cats at the shelter.

“We use (donations) for everything,” Barney said. “We rely 100 percent on donations from the community.”

The donations are used for veterinarian bills, vaccinations, food and to pay the utility bills.

In the winter, when they must turn on the heaters for the dogs, electricity bills get much higher, Barney said.

Already, the bake sale idea seems to be catching on with the community.

Fliers announcing the fundraiser were posted less than a week ago, and they’ve already received more than 30 donations, ranging from $5 to $100.

There is no official end to the Bakeless Bake Sale. Donations might be mailed in at any time throughout the year.

Mail all donations to:
