New Braunfels residents looking for a medical eye exam and great pair of glasses have a new place to go now that Tex Specs has come to town.
Board-certified ophthalmologists J.T. Kavanaugh and Richard Coover, who specialize in diseases of the eye, can examine patients eyes, determine their needs and fit them for a new pair of glasses or contacts on the same visit.
“We offer better guarantees, better service with personalized attention and a full-service office,” Kavanaugh said. “We want to be generational.”
Kavanaugh said he saw a need for another ophthalmologist’s office in New Braunfels.
“There are a lot of patients in New Braunfels,” he said. “There is a need for eye care.”
Kavanaugh, who said he specializes in glaucoma and cataract diagnoses, also performs surgery.
“I do 800 to 900 cataract surgeries a year,” he said. “And 50 to 100 laser surgeries to lower pressure in the eye from glaucoma.”
Kavanaugh completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Medical School of Nottingham, England. He also completed two residencies at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
He said he was lucky to find Coover, who recently joined the practice.
“He has 40-plus years of experience in ophthalmology,” Kavanaugh said.
Tex Specs has state-of-the-art equipment for eye exams, including a retinal camera, a visual field machine that checks for glaucoma and other eye diseases, a tonometer that checks pressure inside the eye and an auto refractor that checks for what type of glasses a patient needs.
The office walls are lined with an array of frames from Gucci and Fendi for the fashion conscious adult to Bratz for “tweens” and Superman and Barbie for the kids. Optician Kathy Goodge said she has frames for all budgets.
“We have a lot of everything and can work with any budget,” she said. “We can put you in a cute pair of glasses for $100 or up.”
Kavanaugh will work out of the New Braunfels Tex Specs office and continue to work out of his Seguin office, Seguin Eye Associates.
“We’re a full-service medical office,” Kavanaugh said. “We can deal with patients from kids to grandma and grandpa.”
