BURNET— Dillon Chafin completed 18 of 26 passes for 255 yards and six touchdowns and Burnet’s 20-point third quarter iced a 40-7 win over Canyon Lake in the District 8-3A season finale on Friday at Bulldog Stadium.

Bulldog’s Spencer Thurman caught six passes for 69 yards and three touchdowns and Brandon Jacque caught 3 passes for 77 yards and a pair of scores to lead Burnet to the win.

Canyon Lake sophomore running back Zach Henshaw carried the ball 23 times for 116 yards and the Hawks’ only touchdown, while Ross Wagliardo was pressured by the Bulldog defense, as the senior quarterback went 12 of 35 for 156 yards and two interceptions on the night.

Canyon Lake ends the season with a 6-4 record and will play in the Class 3A playoffs next week.

A playoff opponent wasn’t known at press time.

After the Bulldogs took a 7-0 lead after the first quarter, Chafin hit Josh Barrera with an 11-yard touchdown and Thurman for the first of his three scores — an 11-yard pass — to go up 21-0.

Henshaw scored on Canyon Lake’s next possession to cut the Bulldog lead to 14, but Chafin hooked up with Thurman for the second time on a 21-yard touchdown for a 27-7 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs had a balanced attack on Friday, as they racked up 141 yards rushing and threw the ball for 281 yards against the Hawk defense.

Jacque caught a 40-yard pass for a touchdown in the third quarter and Thurman’s 5-yard touchdown catch put the game out of reach for Canyon Lake.

Brody Wisdom caught three passes for 57 yards, Joe Shone had three catches for 30 yards, while senior Eric Nelson was held to two catches for 23 yards for the Hawks.
