NB softballer Wersterfer commits to ETBU

Published November 5, 2009

Kristin Wersterfer is already excited about the upcoming 2010 Unicorn softball season, but now the New Braunfels senior can go into the campaign with one less thing on her mind.

The senior shortstop committed to play softball next year for East Texas Baptist University on Wednesday in a celebration at the New Braunfels Field House in front of her family and her team.

“This is a huge day for me,” Wersterfer said. “I’ve been to a few schools, but once I toured the campus at ETBU, I felt really comfortable and it was a natural fit.”

New Braunfels coach Eva Harshman said that the Tigers are getting a special player in Wersterfer.

“On the field, Kristin brings so much leadership,” Harshman said. “She is a very vocal leader and she’s brought so much stability and continuity to the Unicorn infield for four years.

“I’m excited for Kristin’s future. It’s going to be very hard to lose a player as valuable as Kristin. East Texas Baptist is very lucky to get a player of her caliber.”

The Tigers won their first ASC East Division championship and advanced to their first NCAA Tournament since 2004 last season.

Wersterfer said that ETBU assistant coach Bill Galloway has a ton of knowledge for her to soak up, as she felt at ease when talking to him and the rest of the Tiger coaching staff about playing softball for them.

“Coach Galloway knows so much about softball,” Westerfer said. “They play a similar style that I like to play and that will make the transition easy.”

Wersterfer’s style is very aggressive, which is what the Tigers seem to want from this incoming freshman.

Kristin’s dad Kevin was very pleased with his daughter’s college decision.

“The campus was big on student safety and we really enjoyed it,” Kevin said. “Once we got a chance to see all that the college had to offer, it was a no-brainer for us.”

Westerfer plans on studying to become a pharmacist, but first has her sights on leading the Unicorns to the playoffs again, but hopefully with a different outcome than last season.

“(After being swept by Austin Westlake), I really want to come back this season and get back to the playoffs,” Westerfer said. “It was a bitter pill to swallow the way that last season ended, so we’re going to come out fighting.”
