If you see 11-year-old Kenny Standridge cruising around Spring Branch in a Hummer limousine, you’ll know Texas holds the record for the most popcorn sold by a boy scout.
Kenny, a member of the Alamo Area Council, Troop 58, has sold $28,000 worth of popcorn for the Boy Scouts of America’s nationwide fundraiser and is the top seller in the region, which encompasses 11 states.
But to capture the national title, Kenny needs to edge out his competition — a Californian scout who has raised $30,000 — by Jan. 31.
“We’re hoping to get Texas excited about how the state can win the national ranking,” said Kenny’s mom, Debbie Honeycutt.
Kenny started selling Oct. 1 and has been going door-to-door and to businesses all over New Braunfels, Bulverde, Spring Branch, Blanco and San Antonio. He has set up a table showcasing his selection of Trails End gourmet popcorn in front of Wal-mart, Tractor Supply, Lowe’s Home Improvement Store and Pro Cuts.
With the help of the stylists at the Spring Branch Pro Cuts, $250 worth was sold in two hours, and a man outside of Tractor Supply paid with a $100 bill and told Kenny to keep the change.
“People have been really generous,” said Kenny.
Trails End donates 70 percent of the total sales to the Boy Scouts of America, while 40 percent of a scout’s sales are used to pay for his dues and to support earning of merit badges. In addition, for being number one in the region, Kenny will be awarded 12 percent of his sales to use toward a college scholarship at the school of his choice.
Kenny said it’s been hard work but he has been really motivated to beat the record. Plus, his mom promised she would rent a Hummer limo for Kenny and his little sister Katy, 7, to ride around in for a whole day.
