Barbara Kay Rector of New Braunfels, a loving and servant-hearted wife, mother, daughter and sister, passed from this life on Sept. 23, 2009.
Born to O.A. “Mac” and Mable McAdams on Dec. 29, 1946, in Gorman, Texas, she is survived by her husband, Jim; sons Matthew and Mark; her mother, Mable; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sue and Richard Fletcher and Patti and Ralph Fatheree; and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Nan and Donald Browning; six nieces and nephews, their spouses and six great-nieces and nephews were blessed by “Aunt Barbie’s” example and life. Barbara was preceded in death by her father, “Mac” McAdams.
Barbara grew up in Smithville, Texas, graduating salutatorian from Smithville High School and later completed a bachelor’s degree from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, where she was recognized as an “outstanding student.” Beginning her teaching career in the Boling, Texas, followed by Floresville, Texas, Barbara was a long-time teacher, award recipient and head of the English department at Canyon High School, where she touched the lives of countless students who admired her dedication, friendship and tireless efforts to mold young men and women. A dedicated Christian, she was a long-time member of the New Braunfels Church of Christ, where she regularly taught Sunday school classes and worked with the church’s youth group and Bible Bowl. Admired for her selflessness and servant-minded spirit, Barbara nurtured young lives in both the classroom and church body.
A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26 at the New Braunfels Church of Christ. Past and present students will serve as honorary pallbearers for the memorial service.
