Unicorns win regionals, ready for repeat bid

CORPUS CHRISTI — New Braunfels tennis proved once again that they’ve earned their No. 1 ranking.

The Unicorns dominated the competition to win their second consecutive regional team tennis championship at the Region IV team tennis finals Saturday in Corpus Christi.

New Braunfels defeated Harlington South 10-0 in the semifinals and beat Austin Westlake 10-2 in the finals for the title.

Lilly Kimbell fought off Westlake’s Meredith Hopson 6-3, 6-0 in the girls’ No. 1 singles, while No. 2 Sam Adams ousted Taylor Schumacher 6-2, 6-1 and Jarret Fischer beat Sydney Young 6-2, 6-0 in No. 3 singles action.

Kelli Hine and Liza Fieldsend also earned impressive victories.

Kimbell and Fisher led the way for a sweep of the girls’ doubles, while Sam and Harrison Adams won in mixed doubles.

Tucker Brown and Joey Hendrie won for the boys’ doubles.

New Braunfels travels to Lakeway on Friday for a chance to repeat at the 2009 Team Tennis State Championships.
