Get out of town! Nearby shows will please

Published October 21, 2009

If you’re in the mood for a short road trip this week, here are a few suggestions. On Thursday night, Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers will be at Sam’s Burger Joint in San Antonio. In Helotes, at the legendary Floores Country Store, the Band of Heathens will open for Cross Canadian Ragweed on Friday. Both bands have new albums out now, so this has the makings of a great show. Come back on Saturday night to see the legendary Texas icon Ray Price.

Jason Eady is still touring hard to promote his fantastic new CD, ‘When the Money’s All Gone’ and will be back in town this Friday for a free show at Gruene Hall. The album was produced by Kevin Welch and is widely regarded as Eady’s strongest release yet. Eady is one of the best artists on the Texas music scene and I highly recommend catching this show.

Though he’s not going on tour, Garth Brooks has announced he’s planning a series of acoustic shows at the Encore Theater at the Wynn Las Vegas Casino. Tickets go on-sale this Saturday by phone at (702) 770-7469 or online at wynnlasvegas.com. Shows start Dec. 11 and will run through February 2010. Brooks will play 90-minute shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

The Bart Crow Band has a brand new CD coming out next week, titled “Heartworn Tragedy,” and will be at Lone Star Music in Gruene at 6 p.m. Oct. 27. The band will perform a few songs and sign copies of the new CD. I spoke with Crow on a rare day off at his home in Austin.

“We’re very proud of this new CD,” he said. “It’s the most personal album of my career. I wrote about many things going on within my family. I did some co-writing for the album, but in the end, most of the songs I wrote alone were the ones that made the cut.”

I’ll include more info about the band and the album in November when they come back to town for a show at River Road Ice House.

McAdo’s Seafood Company started a free music series on its back patio last week and will continue with music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. This week has Mission City Hot Rhythm Cats scheduled for Thursday and Saturday, with Ponty Bone on tap for Friday night. The music starts about 6 p.m. on Thursday and 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Shows will last about 3 hours each night with the bands taking an occasional break. Come on out, enjoy some good food, drinks and music. For more info, call 830-629-FISH.

Last week, Storyville had to cancel their Gruene Hall gig so opening act 3 Mile Stone moved up to headliners and invited Austin guitarist Megan Tubb to open the show. If you missed 3 Mile Stone last week, you’re in luck. They’ll be at Tavern in the Gruene this Friday night.

The Lonestar Brewery in San Antonio will host its first Indie Music Bash this Saturday. There will be two stages with continuous music beginning at 1 p.m. and going until 11 p.m. Scheduled to appear are Luke Olson, Dale Watson, Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, Texas Tornados, Charlie Robison, Buttercups, Spain Colored Orange, Micky & the Motorcars, Ben Kweller and Jonathan Tyler & Northern Lights.
