Smithson Valley junior running back Travis McCracken stiff-arms a potential Wagner tackler Friday night at Rutledge Stadium.

CONVERSE — The Thunderbirds’ L.J. Butler lifted Wagner to a 27-24 overtime win against Smithson Valley Friday night at Rutledge Stadium after bulldozing his way into the end zone in overtime.

Down 21-15, Wagner (1-0, 1-0) rallied late in the fourth quarter to force an extra period after driving the length of the field and scoring on a 13-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Sam. The potential game-winning extra point missed its mark, setting up an overtime session in the District 27-6A opener for both teams.
