CANYON LAKE (7-2, 2-2) AT LIBERTY HILL (7-1, 4-0)
Kickoff: Today, 7:30 p.m. / Panther Stadium, 16500 W. State Hwy 29, Liberty Hill
— The two teams did not meet in 2017.
— Canyon Lake RB Tristan Chacon is second on the team in both rushing and receiving, having tallied 810 total yards and 11 scores. He has also made an impact on defense for the Hawks this season.
— Liberty Hill RB Kyle Harrison was praised by Canyon Lake head coach Charley Drum as “one of the best backs in the state.” Harrison has amassed more than 1,500 yards on the ground in addition to 23 TDs.
— The Hawks fell victim to a second-half slump last week in a 34-27 loss to Lampasas. Injuries appear to be taking a toll on Canyon Lake following a 7-0 start, as the Hawks have seen their depth depleted and perhaps run out of gas after halftime in consecutive weeks. Coach Drum reports that more players may miss tonight’s game against Liberty Hill, but the good news is that Canyon Lake has already sewn up a playoff berth and could see some players return in time for the Hawks’ postseason opener.
— The Panthers are one of the top-ranked teams in Class 4A and also use the Slot-T on offense to motor past their opponents. Liberty Hill is averaging more than 50 points per game and 576 yards per contest. The Panthers dropped a season-high 89 points in a non-district victory against Pflugerville Connally and lit up the scoreboard to the tune of 77 points in a rout of Taylor last week. Liberty Hill’s closest margin of victory thus far in league play is a 29-point victory against Lampasas on Oct. 19.
Coach Drum says:
— “We’re missing some folks, and other folks have had to step up. At this point in the year, depth can kind of bite you if you let it.”
