WACO — Tennis legend John Newcombe is one of 12 nominees on the recently-released Texas Sports Hall of Fame veterans ballot for the class of 2020.

Newcombe, the winner of 26 grand slam titles during his playing career, founded the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch in New Braunfels in 1968. Since that time, countless tennis hopefuls from around the nation — and beyond — have been trained at Newks Academy.

Newcombe is alongside notable names like former Dallas Cowboys Tony Dorsett and Mel Renfro, former Longhorn All-American Jerry Sisemore and Houston Oilers standout linebacker Robert Brazile on the veterans ballot. At least two members of the ballot will be enshrined in the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco in March of next year.

Members of the 2020 primary ballot include current Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt, former Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre, former Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, and former Texas Longhorn quarterback Colt McCoy.
