Canyon alum and University of Texas sophomore Sam Worley was one of 20 Longhorns to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Austin on June 5-8.

AUSTIN — Canyon High School alums Sam Worley and Alex Rogers have punched their respective tickets to the 2019 NCAA Championships.

And each will enjoy a special home track advantage.

Worley and Rogers were among a group of 20 Longhorn athletes that qualified for the upcoming national meet, which is scheduled to be held on June 5-8 at the University of Texas’ Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

Worley, a sophomore, finished in second place in the 1,500 meters at the West prelims with a time of 3:40.89. It was Worley’s second-fastest time of the season, and his top time of 3:38.64 ranks him fifth nationally.

Rogers, a senior, placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the West prelims after crossing the finish line in 8:35.25. It was the fifth-fastest time in that event in school history.

Rogers also competed in the men’s 1,500 meters and advanced to the quarterfinals but will not move on to nationals in that event. Teammate John Rice finished sixth in the steeplechase with a time of 8:38.29.
