CIBOLO — The Cougars were unable to pull even with East Central in the district standings following a 92-73 loss to 26-6A co-leader Steele Friday night on the road.

Canyon (18-13, 5-8) is still alive in the district’s playoff race and can set up a potential fourth-place tiebreaker with a win in Tuesday’s season finale coupled with another Hornets loss. East Central (21-13, 6-7) fell 78-74 to Judson Friday night on the road.

Josh Rainey (23 points) and Josh Malone (19 points) each had solid outings for the Cougars in Friday night’s setback. Rainey also added 10 rebounds to complete a double-double, while Malone ripped down eight boards. Zavier Perez (12 points) and Caleb Willis (10 points) finished in double figures as well for Canyon.

Head coach Allan Miller’s Cougars are scheduled to host San Marcos Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The Hornets close the regular season on Tuesday by welcoming Steele to town.
