A pressing discussion during National Adoption Awareness month is access to original birth certificates (OBCs) for adult adoptees.

Adoption has evolved from a “closed” secretive past to a modern “open” adoption era, where birth and adoptive families remain in contact in myriad ways. However, when it comes to OBCs, adoption policy remains stagnant.

Restoring access to original birth certificates is being done across the United States. VP Pence passed laws as Gov of Indiana in 2016 which did exactly that. All educated and ethical people and entities support such action based upon modern standards. Senator Campbell has killed bills in 2013, 2015 and 2017 and refuses to meet with constituents on the issue. Why would someone go against the leaders of her own party, science and best practices? We can only speculate.
