NEW BRAUNFELS — A pair of juveniles were caught by police Monday after they reportedly tried to evade capture by running into a New Braunfels HEB, police said on Tuesday.

Capt. John McDonald of the New Braunfels Police Department said officers arrested two male teens around 7:30 a.m. at the HEB, located in the 600 block of S. Walnut Ave. An HEB employee called police because the 16- and 15-year-old males were lingering around the property.

“We got a call that there were two possible vagrants (that HEB) wanted off its property,” McDonald said. “When police arrived, the juveniles fled on foot inside the store.”

McDonald said officers caught the teens soon afterwards. Both were taken to the police station without further incident.

McDonald said police later discovered both are patients at Laurel Ridge Treatment Center — a psychiatric hospital in San Antonio. McDonald said they apparently had escaped Sunday night. He did not say if the boys were returned to the facility. Because both are juveniles, McDonald said he could not give further details.
