NEW BRAUNFELS — A San Antonio boy was found dead in the Comal River early Monday morning.

At 8:40 a.m. Monday, New Braunfels Fire Department dive teams found the body of 6-year-old Xabier Martinez in the river by Hinman Island Park. The child had been missing since Sunday evening.

Capt. John McDonald of New Braunfels Police Department said the body was found “approximately 25 feet from the shore line near the area where he was last seen playing in the water.”

McDonald said the incident remains under investigation and could not say if the death was accidental.

The boy was first reported missing at around 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Hinman Island Park.

“Family members indicated they had not seen the child for approximately 40 minutes prior to notifying police,” McDonald said. “Members of the New Braunfels Police Department, New Braunfels Fire Department dive team and a (Department of Public Safety) helicopter searched the areas in and around the Comal River for several hours until it was too dark to continue the search.”

Search efforts resumed at 8 a.m. Monday.

River and park activity continued Monday as usual, McDonald said.
