Attendees sip beer while listening to live music during the Gruene Wine and Music Festival on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2019. The final day of the festival featured beers rather than wine.

It is a sad week for live music because we should be enjoying the Gruene Music & Wine Festival tonight.

Every October for the past three decades we got ready for this event. When the air turned cool and the leaves started falling, we knew it was almost time. Each year the festival seemed to get bigger and better. On Thursday night it would kick off with a major artist like Clint Black, Marshall Tucker Band, or the Bacon Brothers. Friday night meant an acoustic set by someone like Pat Green or Joe Ely, then the guitar auction followed by a full band set. Saturday featured live music under the outdoor tents, and another major artist headlining at Gruene Hall. Things wrapped up on Sunday with more outdoor music, wine and beer tasting and a full schedule of live music inside the hall.
